September 2021: Week One

Hello Young at Heart Friends and Family,

Ahhh!  It’s so nice to breathe in the fresher air! As natural disasters are happening all around us, I give THANKS that I live in Michigan!!!

Here are some of the up-coming Events:

On-line Classes through MSU-E: Click here for is a series of classes MSU-Extension is offering this Fall. These classes are on-line options, to encourage people to get the information they need, but stay safe.  YAH will continue to offer these classes in-person as deemed appropriate. If you are interested in any of these classes but prefer to do it in-person, please let us know. With the use of the classrooms, small class size, the use of technology, social distancing and masks we are able to create a safe, and informative opportunity.

Presentation on JFK: Next week Wednesday, September 8th at 7:00 pm, Roger Relich will be offering Part II of the presentation on the Assassination of JFK. The doors to the Parish Center will open at 6:30. The event will be held in the cafeteria. We will be serving some yummy desserts.  Bridget Ward, from the Van Belkum branch of the Grand Rapids Public Library will also be there to offer an opportunity to check out books on the topic or answer any questions about this wonderful neighborhood resource. Please RSVP. Cost: Free-will Donation.  (vscholten18@gmail.com  or  call 616.913.4419)

Anniversary Luncheon: On Monday, September 13th, we will be holding a special lunch in honor of Br. Leo Patin’s 60th Anniversary as a Religious Brother.  Lunch will be catered from Vitales. The Ladies Auxiliary will be providing Dessert.  We will also be offering fun activities before and after lunch. Again, please RSVP to help with planning. We anticipate this event taking place in the cafeteria. Lunch will be served around 12:30. Cost: $5.00.

Senior Expo USA:  On Wednesday, September 15th  10:00-1:00, Frederik Meijer Gardens is the setting for this large event. Due to the pandemic, the Expo will be held outdoors this year. Senior Expo USA “connects thousands of Seniors with hundreds of companies every year!”  This is an excellent way to learn more about the for-profit resources West Michigan has to offer Seniors. It highlights opportunities for Seniors to be more involved in their community, resources to assist the challenges of aging, information about Senior discounts, and so forth. There will be free coffee/bagels, drawings for gift cards, and free health screens.  Register on-line, or RSVP (vscholten18@gmail.com  or call  616.913.4419) and join YAH. We will be carpooling, leaving St.Al’s at 10:45.  Cost:  FREE http://www.seniorexpousa.com/

We look forward to serving you, meeting you, growing and having fun together!
Prayers for a Healthy Fall!

August 2021: Week Five

Hello Young at Heart Friends and Family,

Summer continues and so does the Young at Heart! We continue to strive to offer activities that are healthy, fun, encouraging and safe during these confusing times. We have some sad but hopeful news, a correction, activity summaries and additional information for upcoming events.  We look forward to seeing you!

Computer Class put on hold: It is with great sadness that I inform you, our computer instructor passed away suddenly over the weekend. Our condolences to the family. Many of you have expressed an interest in this class. We will search for another instructor. If you have any leads for a class facilitator, please feel free to pass them along.

📖  One correction:  The Happy Bookers Book Club will be reading/discussing, “The Drummond Girls: A Story of Fierce Friendship Beyond Time and Chance” by Michigan author, Mardi Link. (Not The Firekeeper’s Daughter, as printed on the September calendar.) I apologize for the confusion. The Book Club will meet Tuesday, September 21st @11:00 in Room 304. Social distancing is available in this classroom. Face masks are encouraged.

🌳  PHOTOS: We had a wonderful outing to the Leila Arboretum despite the warm weather. We were blessed with a docent who shared the history of the area, as well as one of the original chainsaw carvers who was instrumental in the creation of Fantasy Forest. The display is a budding endeavor with more plans for the future.

Great Presentation: We had a wonderful turn-out for Part One of Roger Relich’s presentation on the theories behind the assassination of JFK. He was pleased with the questions and level of participation. We hope to see you back on September 8th. We will be serving dessert at 6:30, with the presentation starting at 7:00pm. We will meet in the cafeteria to allow for social distancing. Please RSVP.

🍷 Upcoming Events: On Wednesday, September 1st we will be going to Robinette’s Apple Haus and Winery for lunch and wine tasting. Please get your RSVP in soon to help plan transportation and the winetasting portion of this outing. Wine tasting includes your choice of six samples. Cost is $3.00 and includes a souvenir glass. If you have previously purchased a glass, you may do the wine tasting for free. What a deal!!!

God’s Peace and stay healthy!
