Always Learning

Hello Young at Heart Friends and Family;

Every day we are capable of learning something new, if we look for it. Currently the leadership team at YAH is learning at a faster rate as we continue to experience various aspects of our new 501c3 status. YAH is involved in many dimensions of learning as we collaborate with other organizations in Grand Rapids. Here are a few highlights this week:

  • Monday, Chris and Virginia participated in a brief taping about YAH at WOOD TV. Jennifer Feuerstein, from AARP did a brief interview as we reached out to the Grand Rapids community to raise awareness about the services offered through the Young at Heart Senior Enrichment Center. The taping will be broadcasted on TV4 at noon on Tuesday, February 18. Tune in and learn more about this local weekly broadcast. We will share the link to this broadcast in a future email.
  • YAH will be working with three students from GVSU Seidman School of Business. As they learn more about YAH, we will learn more about Marketing. Hopefully they will stop in and get a chance to learn from you directly.
  • Likewise, two weeks ago the Calvin Nursing Students learned about YAH through interviewing many of the participants. Now we have a chance to learn from them as they offer the following presentations. Join the Calvin Student Nurses as they present on these topics at 10:30 in the Gathering Room.
    • Wednesday, February 12: Sleep – Sleep hygiene to get a full night’s rest.
    • Wednesday, February 19: Nutrition – How to read food labels with examples of healthy foods.
    • Wednesday, February 26: Mental Health – Strategies to lower anxiety and keep the brain sharp

On the sad side:

YAH lost one of its original members. Patricia Adams joined YAH when we first opened our doors in 2014. One of my early memories of Pat was her excitement and eagerness to learn and have fun, As a recent retiree, she was concerned she wouldn’t have much to do. A woman of strong faith, Pat was always eager to meet new people and share her proud Irish heritage. She helped get the morning brew going and loved telling stories about her family. She was excited to play Uno or Skip-Bo, share a sewing project, invite others to join YAH, and of course tease everyone. Whether it was teasing a woodcarver, her teammates in Team Trivia or Bingo, she brought joy and laughter as we all learned together. Our condolences to the family. May you rest in Peace, Pat. You will be missed! May we all remember the joy you brought and taught us.

God’s Peace,

Virginia
